Windows Advanced permissions
From Jonsdocswiki
The NTFS allows you to set permissions on files - who can access them and what level of access they have, this is stored in the DACL (Discretionary Access Control List (on WP)). Standard permissions comprise of:
- Full control
- Modify
- Read & Execute
- List Folder Contents
- Read
- Write
Special permissions are more detailed and allow you to be more accurate in the access you want to grant. You access these through the advanced security settings window.
Setting Windows Advanced Permissions
- Right click the folder / file in question and click properties
- Click the security tab
- At the bottom right of this window click the advanced button
- You will be presented with the Advanced Security Settings window, click Add... (you will be presented with the permission entry window) to add a new set of permissions
- Type the desired user or group (e.g. Staff) and click check names - if there's more than one option pick the desired one
- On Apply onto: ensure the correct option is applied (for example if you're fixing the access denied synchronising problem you will only want this folder only)
- Under Permissions: tick the relevant permissions
- Click OK to close the permission entry window
- Click OK to close advanced security settings
- Click Apply or OK to make the permissions effective.
- Click OK
