Useful disks for a technician's CD toolkit.


Commercial and Licensed

Disks listed here are commercial, paid for, utilities and are licensed to a specific institution. These may not be used outside of work for this establishment.


  1. Windows Install CDs Microsoft Home Page
    • Windows XP Professional SP2
    • Windows 7 Professional
    • CD Keys should not be kept with the CD (in case it is stolen)
  2. Spinrite - for HDD data recovery.

Public Domain / Free

Tools listed here are either:

  • In the public domain as free downloads (e.g. MS Updates)
  • Free
  • Free and Open Source (GNU GPL, Apache License or similar)

and may be used outside the establishment.


  1. Microsoft Update disks
    • Disks containing XP SP3, KB958644, Office Service Packs and similar.
    • Saves time downloading from the Microsoft Website / Microsoft Update.
  2. Trinity Rescue Kit
    • Linux boot CD used for recovery of data, virus checking and general checks.
    • Also useful for file recovery using DD and Photorec in the event of a problem memory stick. See Data Recovery Part 2
  3. Clonezilla - for making and restoring machine images.
  4. Parted Magic - for adjusting Harddisk partitions and general maintenance.
  5. DBAN - Darik's Boot And Nuke, used to securely erase all data on attached harddisks and storage media.
  6. Gentoo Live DVD - Another Linux live disk but this one provides a graphical environment. Useful for testing if a machine is having driver or hardware problems.
  7. Post incident / post viral Response Disk
    • Produced in house by JHA
    • Contains a collection of utilities to get more detailed information regarding a potentially contaminated Windows system.
    • Can be used in conjunction with the Trinity Rescue Kit
