Directory
A directory is a "container" on the filesystem in which files can be placed for easier organisation. An example directory on a Windows system would be the Program Files directory where many programs are installed by default.

Folder
The term folder is given to a directory in Microsoft Windows because the WindowsGUI represents a directory by use of folder icon (see right).

Active Directory terms
Active Directory
Microsoft's implementation of the LDAP protocol. Active Directory is used to manage users, computers, policies and the Windows Domain.
AD
Short for Active Directory - see Active Directory
Domain
A security perimeter for a computer network, so to speak. A domain sets rules, permits access based on user privileges and controls resources.
OU
Organisational Unit
Like a folder in the file system, an Organisational Unit contains objects - computers, users, groups - in Active Directory. OU's can have group policies applied to them whereas containers can not.
DC
Domain controller - a computer that holds a copy of the Active Directory.

Microsoft related
BSOD
Blue Screen Of Death - when Windows crashes completely a BSOD may be presented to the user providing additional information. This may be followed by an automatic restart.
