When creating a user a lot of information is specified by hand - copying a user copies all details except for their username and password, this includes:

  • Group memberships
  • Profile paths
  • Home paths (if these were specified using the %USERNAME% system variable then this is automatically adjusted to the new username)

Copying a user

  1. Open Active Directory Users and Computers or the administration tool you've been given.
  2. Find the user you wish to copy
  3. Right click the user and choose Copy... from the menu
  4. Enter the new user's name and desired logon name
  5. Click Next and enter a password, setting options there as relevant
  6. Click Next - you will be shown a summary, if all is good click Finish
    1. If the user home path wasn't specified using the %USERNAME% system variable you will receive an error and have to act accordingly.

The user will have been copied into the same Organisational Unit (OU) as the original user.
