Problem

KB974417 doesn't install and gives an error. This can also be observed as a failed update in WSUS.

Fix

In order to resolve this issue another update must be uninstalled:

1. Go to Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs.
2. Choose Show updates (a tick box at the top of the window).
3. Scroll down to the .NET Framework installs and find KB976569 and uninstall it!
4. Restart your computer.
5. Install KB974417 first.
6. Restart and install KB976569
